SYNLAB’s Collection Service provides sample collection for drug and alcohol testing, using urine or oral fluid samples. Our Collection Technicians operate according to UK and European guidelines to ensure the process meets legally defensible standards.
When is the Collection Service available?
The SYNLAB Collection Service booking line is available 24/7, 365 days a year. Technicians aim to arrive on-site for ‘For Cause’ testing within two hours of a booking call, depending on location. Remote postcodes may take longer, which will be communicated during booking.
How do I book a Drug and Alcohol test?
Drug and Alcohol tests can be booked through our Duty Manager team:
‘For Cause’ Tests: Call the dedicated number shared during account setup. These requests must be made by phone.
Pre-Arranged Tests: Use the online booking form available at SYNLAB booking page.
Please have your unique account PIN, collection address, and any special instructions ready when booking.
What happens after I book a test?
After a booking is confirmed:
1. A Collection Technician is assigned and dispatched.
2. You will receive a call with the Technician’s name and estimated arrival time.
3. Any significant delays will be communicated to the site contact.
Can I cancel a booking?
‘For Cause’ Tests: Once a technician is dispatched, cancellation incurs the full collection charge.
Pre-Arranged Tests: Cancellations within 48 hours of the booking time will incur a cancellation fee.
Where can sample collections take place?
Sample collections can take place at any company premises across the UK, provided suitable facilities are available. These must include secure areas for urine or oral fluid collections as described below.
What onsite facilities are required for sample collection?
Urine Collections:
• A lockable storage area for the donor’s valuables.
• Exclusive-use toilet and wash basin.
• Privacy for the donor, with access limited to authorized persons.
• Quiet area for completing documentation in private.
General Requirements:
• A waiting area for donors.
• A site representative to oversee the process.
Technicians may implement precautions such as adding dye to the toilet water or securing taps to prevent sample tampering.
How long does the sample collection process take?
Single Sample (Urine or Oral Fluid): Approximately 20 minutes per donor.
Combination Tests (e.g., Urine and Breath Test): Around 30 minutes per donor.
For cases of ‘shy bladder,’ donors may consume up to 250ml of water every 20 minutes (up to 1 litre) until a sufficient sample is provided. A customer representative must remain with the donor during this time.
What if our site has special requirements?
SYNLAB Collection Technicians follow your site-specific rules, including:
• Health and safety protocols.
• Parking, signing in/out, and smoking restrictions.
• Any additional requirements you communicate to us.
If you have unique needs, please inform us as soon as possible.
What is a ‘For Cause’ Test?
‘For Cause’ testing is conducted when there is reasonable suspicion of drug or alcohol use. These tests are prioritized, and our technicians aim to respond within two hours of your booking.
Is the sample collection process secure?
Yes. SYNLAB uses strict checklists and documentation to ensure samples are collected, handled, and processed according to legal and best-practice standards. A site representative must be present during the process to protect the donor and technician.
